Alibaba (NYSE:BABA), Huawei and several other Chinese tech firms have applied to the country’s technology regulator to ask to build and integrate deepfake models.
According to a translated statement from the Cyberspace Administration of China, the agency has received 110 applications from companies in an effort to perform “domestic deep synthesis service algorithm filing.”
“Deep synthesis service technical supporters should refer to the procedures for filing, modification, and cancellation of filing,” the translated statement added. “Deep synthesis service providers and technical supporters who have not yet completed the filing procedures are requested to apply for the filing as soon as possible.”
The news comes as China looks to loosen the reigns on its technology industry in an effort to boost its struggling economy.
Earlier this week, Baidu (BIDU) said its Ernie generative AI chatbot, is now fully open to the general public.
Baidu (BIDU) also said that it would soon launch a suite of new “AI-native” apps to help with the four core abilities of generative AI: understanding, generation, reasoning, and memory.
The approval comes about a month after China published interim measures for managing generative AI services, which went into effect August 15. The move will bring ChatGPT style AI service to more than 1B internet users for the first time.
